What sets Mia apart from other sites?
Miacademy and MiaPrep distinguish themselves from other online learning platforms in several ways. First and foremost, we believe that interaction is crucial for an enriched learning experience. Unlike other online homeschool curriculums, we facilitate student interaction through a range of activities, all within a secure, parent-moderated environment. This includes features such as contributing to the weekly newspaper, managing virtual shops, and creating and sharing videos.
Secondly, we provide a highly customizable curriculum. Our courses span grades K-8 on Miacademy and 7-12 on MiaPrep. Depending on the selected site, parents can assign any course at any time, personalizing their start or end dates and weekly study schedules on a per-course basis. We acknowledge that each student is unique, and believe that parents know what is best for their kids. Therefore, we aim to offer a curriculum that can be adapted to suit individual needs. This includes the option for parents to modify courses to meet their child's specific requirements and to reassign or remove individual lesson components as needed.
Lastly, our curriculum delivery stands out due to its engaging format. We supply immersive PDFs with almost every lesson, accompanied by captivating instructional videos, online practice with instant feedback, and automatically graded assessments. Additionally, we prioritize supporting students with diverse learning styles and continuously collect and incorporate parent feedback to enhance our tools and resources.
In summary, we believe that our focus on interaction, customization, and engaging curriculum delivery differentiates us from other online learning platforms, enabling us to offer a truly unique and effective learning experience for our students. To experience it firsthand, we suggest signing up for our 30-day trial.
How do you handle communication of website and curriculum updates to customers?
Our members are our top priority! We regularly release new content and announce its availability through newsletters. Instead of automatically assigning new content to students, we make it accessible for parents to assign as needed.
Occasionally, we have larger updates to content or website features. Significant changes are always announced multiple times in advance via email and Facebook. Our customer service team is well-trained and ready to address questions and concerns as they arise. We take user feedback very seriously, and these updates reflect our commitment to responding to that feedback. To minimize disruptions for our members, we typically schedule updates during periods of least impact, such as summer.
I've decided to switch. How do I align my child's account with their previous work?
Upon creating your child's account, the system will automatically assign grade-level appropriate courses for each core subject to help you begin. This is the only time the system assigns content automatically. You are free to unassign any lessons your child has completed elsewhere or assign additional lessons. You can even unassign all content and start anew if you wish. The choice is yours to tailor your child's curriculum to their needs and preferences.
Here's a link to our Scheduling Tutorial Video (https://vimeo.com/744642146), which demonstrates how to add and remove courses and unassign content within courses.
If you require evidence for your child's portfolio, consider assigning only the assessments for core courses. This approach enables your child to progress swiftly through the curriculum. Our Reports page tracks scores for individual lessons and calculates average scores for each course. Additionally, you can view the answers your student selected for each question. When assigning only assessments, students maintain access to all lesson materials, allowing them to review as needed.
I'm unsure where to begin. Do you offer a placement test?
We recognize the significance of accurate placement for your child. Although we are actively exploring ways to implement such tests in the future, we regret that we do not currently offer a placement test.
In the meantime, our Scope and Sequence documents can be downloaded from the parent homepage or under the "Curriculum" tab in your parent account. These documents offer a comprehensive overview of courses available at each grade level, which can help you determine the best fit for your child. If you find that your child is not quite ready for a specific level or subject, you can easily adjust the assigned grade level or lessons as needed. Many parents in similar situations have opted to assign only the assessments from a course and set a minimum passing score. This approach requires the student to complete the assessments while granting full access to the rest of the lesson content. If the student passes the assessment, they can advance to the next one; if not, the assessment will be reassigned, and they can access the video, complete the online practice, and utilize the PDFs as needed.
